Tablet vendors shipments – additional information
The number of tablet shipments worldwide is expected to grow from around 230 million units in 2014 to nearly 270 million units by 2019. Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America are the largest regional markets in the world, as they usually account for about 80 percent of all tablet shipments worldwide.
Apple is the leading tablet vendor worldwide in terms of shipments. Since the iPad’s introduction to the consumer market in 2010, Apple has sold about 300 million units worldwide. As a pioneer in the tablet market, Apple’s iPad market share amounted to 60 percent at the beginning of 2012. However, despite the release of new versions of the iPad to the consumer market, Apple’s competitors have gained ground and started taking over a greater market share. Nevertheless, Apple remains the market leader. In the fourth quarter of 2015 alone, Apple shipped 16.1 million iPads worldwide, more than Samsung, Lenovo and Huawai combined in that particular quarter.
Samsung, the South Korean-based semiconductor, telecom and technology giant, is the second largest tablet vendor in the world. In 2015, Samsung shipped more than 33 million tablets worldwide. Samsung’s market share has been slowly increasing over the years – from around seven percent in the second quarter of 2011 to 17 percent four years later. Lenovo, a Chinese technology company, has also been growing in the tablet market, going from shipping 600 thousand units in the first quarter of 2013 to 3.2 million tablets in the third quarter of 2015.
