The entertainment and media industry is a multi-billion dollar market in China. As of 2010, the media market in China had a market size of about 96 billion US dollars, and was estimated to double in size by 2016. One main source of revenue in this industry results from advertising spending for advertisements placed. By 2018, advertising spending in China was projected to climb as high as 67 billion U.S. dollars. In recent years, the distribution of ad spending in China gradually shifted away from traditional media channels towards internet and mobile advertisements. By 2016, digital media is estimated to take up 37 percent of total ad spending in China.

In China, print media such as newspapers and magazines displayed different growth patterns in the past decade. From 2003 to 2013, a decrease in the number of newspaper publications in Chinacoincided with a 25 percent increase of the total amount of newspaper copies sold. Simultaneously, the number of magazine publications saw a gain of more than 800 magazines, while the total amount of magazine copies sold grew by about 11 percent.

Upon closer view, worldwide media markets seem to have differing development paths. In major developing countries, the newspaper market is growing steadily in contrast to many developed countries. According to PwC, between 2013 and 2017, China is expected to have a compound annual growth rate of six percent, while India enjoys a ten percent annual growth rate. Growth rates for market the U.S., Italy and Japan are estimated to diminish by three percent, respectively.
