Smartphone sales in China – additional information
In 2015, the number of smartphones sold worldwide reached a new high, with about 1.4 billion units sold. In the same year, a quarter of the world’s population had access to a smartphone, as the global smartphone penetration rate passed the 25 percent mark for the first time. At a steadily increasing rate, smartphone penetration is estimated to grow to around 35 percent in 2019. By that time, more than 60 percent of Chinese mobile phone users will be using a smartphone, as the number of smartphone users in China is estimated to reach 687 million.
In 2015, China surpassed the United States as the leading smartphone market in terms of shipments, which continue to rise reaching more than 430 million units. Another source however puts this figure at 385 million units. By 2016, China’s smartphone market is estimated to peak at nearly 400 million shipments, enabling China to maintain its global pole position. Some of the major smartphone vendors are based in China. Huawei, for example, ships more than 100 million smartphones annually, trailing only the industry leaders Samsung and Apple.
