In 2022, M&A deals made in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) valued a total of 38.4 billion euros. The merging of two companies into one, or the ‘buying’ of one company by another through acquisition is a common practice in the corporate world. Merger and acquisition (M&A) can be used to fulfill several strategies including growth, expansion, increasing market share, eliminating a competitor, or even talent acquisition. For both the buyer and seller, strategic drivers differ.
M&A deals in Central and Eastern Europe
Between 2018 and 2022, M&A deals in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) fluctuated both in terms of value and volume. The leading sector for M&A deals in the region was technology, followed by industrials, energy, and utilities. The total value of mergers and acquisitions in Europe during 2022 was approximately 1.9 trillion euros.
Largest deals
As of January 2023, the 10 highest-valued deals in Europe all took place between 1999 and 2015. The largest M&A deal during this period was Vodafone AirTouch's acquisition of Mannesmann AG for the price of 202.8 billion euros in 1999. Mannesmann AG was a German industrial conglomerate, originating in 1890 as the manufacturer of steel pipes. Its success in the area of telecommunications was the reason for the takeover by the British company. This deal was not only the largest in Europe, but in the world.
