M&A activity in Romania: largest transactions in 2020

The statistic shows the leading merger and acquisition (M&A) deals in Romania in 2020, by transaction value. The largest deal amounted to 1.2 billion euros; this was the price paid for the acquisition of 100 percent stake of power production and distribution assets of CEZ in Romania by Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA) (Australia). The smallest deal in the top five amounted to 97 million euros by S IMMO (Austria) to acquire Campus 6.2 and Campus 6.3 office buildings in Bucharest. All in all, the total value of M&A transactions in Romania in 2020 amounted to 2.62 billion euros, while in 2019, M&A transactions reached 2.82 billion euros.

Number of M&A deals

The highest number of merger and acquisition transactions completed in Romania was in 2011, totaling 162 deals. By 2019, the number slightly dropped to 143 deals, out of which only 24 transactions were disclosed. Out of the total number of M&A completed in 2019, only 14 of them were worth over 100 million euros, while the majority were up to 40 million euros.

Main industries for M&A transactions

In 2019, most of the M&A deals were completed in the IT&C sector, followed by real estate and health care and pharma. M&A transactions in the retail sector accounted for only eight percent. At the same time, the M&A market had a contribution to Romania’s GDP of 2.6 percent, with the most valuable M&A transactions being in the real estate industry.
