Total number of employees working in the Royal Bank of Scotland from 2005 to 2017 (in 1,000s)

Employee numbers of the Royal Bank of Scotland group 2005-2017 This statistic shows the development of employee numbers in the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) from 2005 to 2017. Royal Bank of Scotland is one of the retail banking subsidiaries of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc., alongside NatWest and Ulster Bank. The Royal Bank of Scotland was established in 1724. The figures presented in this statistic detailed staff numbers as full time equivalents of all positions. As data showed, employee number increased rapidly before the crisis in 2007; hitting 226.4 thousand of people working for the Scottish bank worldwide. Since then, a persistent trend of decrease in personnel has been observed. In the most recent years, the employment numbers looked as follows: from from 118.6 thousand people working for the bank in 2013 to going below the threshold of one hundred thousand, with 91.5 thousand in 2014 and the most recent figure of 71.2 thousand people employed in 2017. The staffing costs were also being reduced by the bank, alongside the employee numbers. These values were a reflection of the recovery attempts, made by the bank to address the losses of over 50 billion British pounds, which it suffered during and as a result of the global financial crisis of 2008.
