Children's share of total population in the United Kingdom (UK) 2013-2060

The child population (0-14) of the United Kingdom, is expected to account for 18.3 percent of the population by 2025, with that share falling to 17 percent twenty years later in 2040. This share is expected to fall to 17 percent by 2040, and then increase slightly to 17.2 percent twenty years later in 2060.

Ageing population in the UK

In 1976 only 14.2 percent of the United Kingdom’s population was over of 65, but by 2016 this had increased to 18 percent. By 2046 it is forecasted that almost a quarter of the UK population will be over the age of 65, an estimated 19 million people.

Working population in decline

The gradual ageing of the population is a problem faced by many Western countries, with the share working populations (15-64) declining by 2.8 percent in the UK between 2010 and 2017. During the same period, Frances working population declined by 2.3 percent, and Germany’s by 0.4 percent.
