Virtual reality HDM shipments worldwide – additional information
By offering simulations of real situations, producing an immersive multimedia environment and creating a sensory experience for users, virtual reality (VR) is one of the fastest growing emerging technologies today. Since the technology has been able to offer more novel functionalities in recent years, growing consumer interest has driven growth in the VR product market exponentially. By 2018, the total number of active virtual reality users is expected to reach 171 million. Revenue generated from VR products worldwide is projected to increase more than twofold from 2015 to reach 5 billion U.S. dollars in 2018.
An important device that allows users to immerse in the VR environment is the head-mounted display (HMD) – a wraparound hardware which does not allow light or images from the outside to interfere with the virtual images. The HMD market is set to grow and progress towards mainstream adoption for consumers and commercial use in the coming years. New virtual reality HMDs in the market, including Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Sony Morpheus are expected to be available along with video games and entertainment content in 2016.
By 2018, unit sales of HMDs are forecast to reach a new high of almost 40 million units and generate about 3.8 billion U.S. dollars in revenues worldwide. Global VR HDM shipments are projected to reach more than 6 million units in 2017,three times more when compared to the previous year.
