Import value of tobacco products in Germany 2009-2022, by product group

Germany has been importing a decreasing worth of cigarettes in recent years, with value amounting to around 1.24 billion euros in 2022. Still, cigarettes were among the most expensive imported tobacco products that year.

Daily smokers

Smoking habits are undergoing long-term changes in Germany, both for financial and health-related reasons. In terms of saving money, statistics speak for themselves. The average price for one cigarette in Germany has only gone up in recent years, reaching around 33.3 euro cents in 2022. This development might be one of the reasons for annually falling daily smoking levels in Germany. If in 1991 the smoking population collectively consumed 401 cigarettes a day, in 2022 that number was 180 cigarettes.

A determined industry

While imports may be decreasing, the tobacco industry is not one to go up in smoke easily. The manufacturing of tobacco products in Germany is predicted to generate around 29 billion U.S. dollars in industry revenue in 2023, though figures are thus far not expected to grow significantly in the following years.
