Italy: record labels 2018, by region Italian record labels concentrate in few regions. Data from March 2018 indicate how the greatest number of Italian record labels is in Lombardy, Lazio and Emilia Romagna with 318, 187 and 166 record labels, respectively. This can be associated to the number of record stores in the country, mainly located in these three regions, and Veneto as well.
Death of physical music?

The activities of record labels and record stores are often related to the market of physical music in general. While the value of Italian music streaming market reached about 26 billion euros in 2016, the market value of physical music decreased to 32 billion euros, if compared to the previous year. Over the same period, vinyl had better selling performance, with a market value going from 2.3 million euros in 2015 to 3.4 million euros in 2016.

Record labels and music streaming: global overview

The business of record labels must not be considered as opposite to the music streaming industry. Record companies had to differentiate their business in order to generate revenues, aside from physical music. Globally, big record labels like Universal, Sony or Warner had significant market shares in the streaming sector and the revenues generated from streaming increased from 1.8 to 4.3 billion U.S. dollars only in the years between 2015 and 2017.
