Number of retail chains in Hungary 2022, by sector

In 2021, there were 122 retail chains in Hungary covering 19 different sectors, varying from books and magazines to fashion and consumer electronics. Fashion and clothing was the leading sector, with 32 chains out of the total of 123, followed by sports and leisure, with 19 retail chains. Personal care and consumer electronics ranked in joint third place, standing at 12 chains each.

Fashion and clothing retail in Hungary

In 2019, there were approximately 127 thousand retail shops in Hungary out of which 14.5 thousand were clothes retail stores. Even though clothing and fashion items are considered highly affordable in Hungary compared to other EU member states, in 2019, household spending on clothing amounted to 617 billion forints.

In 2019, the biggest shopping malls by gross leasable area in Hungary were Árkád Budapest and Aréna Mall, both located in the capital.
