It is dedicated to the arts and history in Amsterdam and the collection contains more than 2,000 paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. Work from notable painters such as Frans Hals, Vermeer and Rembrandt are collected by the museum, including the famous Night Watch by Rembrandt. Rijksmuseum attracted approximately 2.16 million visitors in 2017, which is a decrease compared to the previous years. In total, 31 million people visited museums in the Netherlands during that year. Most of these individuals visited a museum with a historical type of collection, whereas museums with an art collection attracted roughly 12.9 million visitors.
Van Gogh most visited museum

The Van Gogh Museum was the leading museum in the Netherlands based on visitor volumes. As of 2017 Van Gogh Museum welcomed roughly 2.25 million visitors. Rijksmuseum seized the second place, and the Anne Frank museum had 1.276 million museum visitors. From the ten most popular museums, eight were situated in Amsterdam. Most of these visitor museums were focused on historical and art collections.

Most Museumcard holders older than 35 years

For individuals that visit museums regularly, the museum card offers entrance to 400 museums in the Netherlands. Regarding the distribution of Museumcard holders by age, more than 80 percent of the visits by Museumcard holders were older than 35 years in 2017.
