Number of residential property transactions in Scotland 2012-2022

Transaction activity in the residential market in Scotland declined after a record year in 2021. In 2022, there were about 105,000 housing transactions, down from about 114,000 the year before. This includes all residential property transactions with a value of 40,000 British pounds and above. One of the many reasons for the decline was the rapid house price increase in 2021, as well as the cost of living crisis, and the higher mortgage rates.

The source added the following information "From April 2015 Stamp Duty Land Tax was replaced by Land and Buildings Transaction Tax (LBTT) in Scotland and HMRC stopped collecting data on Scotland's transactions. HMRC are using LBTT data from Revenue Scotland to continue the series. However, there might be some discontinuities for the Scottish component of the series after April 2015. Transactions statistics are reported based upon when transactions were completed and only include those with a value of above £40,000."
