The statistic illustrates the results of survey that took place from 2008 to 2015 among U.S. adults about the use of public transit; the results were grouped by age and transit mode. Some 21 percent of the respondents aged 25 to 34 years used the bus as a transit mode in that period.

The report was prepared for the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) by CJI Research Corporation and uses data from 695,748 passenger questionnaires completed from 2008 to 2015, making it the most extensive public transit report in terms of demographics in the United States. The survey data includes a total of 211 reports on systems that carried a total of more than eight billion unlinked passenger trips. The majority of the surveys were paper-based with only one major survey in a large urban area conducted on a tablet and another major household survey conducted by telephone.
