After falling to 416 thousand in 2020 with the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, domestic arrivals in the city bounced back to 730 thousand in 2021, then peaked at 870 thousand in 2022.

Domestic tourism in Venice

In 2022, most domestic tourists in Venice came from the neighboring region of Lombardy, with roughly 189 thousand arrivals. Travelers from that area also recorded the highest number of domestic overnight stays in Venice, ahead of Lazio.

International tourism in Venice

Although Venice is undoubtedly popular among national tourists, international travelers play an essential role in the city’s tourism market. In 2022, the number of international tourist arrivals in Venice rose to just under four million, but did not catch up with pre-pandemic levels yet.
