Information sources normally used in Germany 2019

This statistic shows the results of a survey about the information sources normally used in Germany. In 2019, around 71.7 percent of the German-speaking population searched the internet if they wanted to find more detailed and comprehensive information. Regarding the source of the survey, the Allensbacher Markt- und Werbeträgeranalyse (AWA) uses a broad statistical base to determine attitudes, consumption habits and media usage of the population in Germany.

Friends and family vs. the media

While web searches were a popular method of obtaining information, the majority of respondents preferred to ask relatives, friends and acquaintances. In terms of the media, these were increasingly less used by the population for information purposes. While television continued to lead among so-called traditional media, the same could not be said for newspapers, magazines and the radio. This could be connected to varying levels of trust in the media in Germany.

Where to look

The type of source used for finding information depends on what kind of information the user is searching for. One example are politics. Most Germans watch public television channels for information on political events and news. On the other hand, when researching goods and services, the majority of Germans will go online.
