Coffee consumption trends in the UK - statistics & facts

The coffee industry is constantly evolving. Coffee lovers and producers are always coming up with innovative ways to consume and sell this popular beverage, as coffee is often an essential part of everyday life. In general, the coffee market is very important in many countries around the world, including the United Kingdom.
This can be seen in the revenue of the coffee market: it has been increasing steadily since 2021, and is forecasted to reach a revenue of two billion British pounds in 2028. Taking a closer look at the sales of the individual coffee brands in the United Kingdom, Nescafé leads the ranking. As of 2023, it generated more than 39 million British pounds in coffee sales, almost four times the amount generated by its leading competitor Kenco. Kenco achieved approximately ten million British pounds. Nescafé is an instant coffee brand owned by Nestlé, while Kenco is a British brand of instant, roast and ground coffee owned by JDE Peet's.

How do Brits like to drink their coffee at home?

First, it is interesting to look at the most popular brewing methods for coffee. Brits use a variety of different methods when it comes to making a cup at home, where they usually consume instant coffee, according to a survey from 2021. This applies to both the general public, stated by 73 percent, and coffee lovers, reaching a share of 59 percent. When asked which milk alternative they preferred for their coffee, oat milk was the clear winner, followed by almond, soy and coconut milk. Also, Brits don’t seem to like sweet coffee. Another study found that a share of 70 percent drink their coffee without sugar.

How often do Brits drink coffee?

The majority of British consumers drink coffee every day. In fact, in 2022, over 30 percent of coffee consumers in the UK drank coffee several times a day, while 24 percent consumed the caffeinated beverage once a day. About 23 percent of respondents didn’t drink coffee at all. But how exactly is this distributed among the generations? Gen X and Baby Boomers stated that they drink coffee at home or at work multiple times a day, reaching a share of 45 and 50 percent respectively. However, most of Gen Z said they don’t drink coffee at home or at work.
