Bank holidays: how Ireland compares to other EU countries

Yesterday, along with many countries, Ireland enjoyed its first bank holiday of the summer. Even though people enjoyed their time off all the way from Donegal to Cork, some might be wondering if they actually have a pretty raw deal. According to European Union data, Ireland lags behind other EU nations in bank holidays. Austria, Sweden, Poland and Portugal are all going to have 13 bank holidays this year.
There have been calls for more bank holidays in Ireland with Sinn Féin in particular formulating a plan to celebrate the Easter Rising with a new holiday. That was rejected last year, meaning Ireland will still have to struggle on with 9 days. That's still one more than their neighbours in the UK who have to make do with just 8.
