Japan: children number at day care centers

In 2023, there were less than two million infants enrolled in child day care centers in Japan, representing a decline for nine consecutive years since 2015. Meanwhile, the number of child day care centers in the country amounted to about 23.8 thousand facilities.

Daycare centers for children refer to the facilities established for performing child care for infants and toddlers. The fixed number of children per facility is set to more than 20 people; excluding “integrated centers for early childhood education and care.”
Only centers for child nurseries approved by prefecture governors and mayors of designated cities and core cities are included according to the Child Welfare Act.
