In 2019, 58 percent of Italian respondents believed that same sex marriage should be allowed throughout Europe.
In Italy, civil unions have been recognized by law in 2016. A survey conducted in 2018 shows that around 43 percent of Italian respondents considered the civil partnership law as an important step for the equality of rights of same sex couples.
