Despite most apps and mobile services requiring at least its user's name and email address for authentication, as of 2019 only slightly more than half of smartphone owners in the United Kingdom believed they already share this information online. Additionally, just 36 percent claimed to have already shared their phone number, 28 percent their address and a mere 22 percent their browsing activity. On top of this, 18 percent of respondents did not know what personal information of theirs was being shared online. Although there is a growing awareness of data tracking and sharing amongst internet users, it appears that a majority of smartphone owners are not yet aware of the full extent of this.
