Fitbit device sales registered an impressive growth from 2010 to 2014, rising from almost 60 thousand units sold to over 10 million. The company has six trackers with fitness and health related functions, such as counting steps, calories, distance, active minutes, monitoring heart rate and sleep tracking. It also sells a Wi-Fi connected scale. Four of their products, Fitbit Surge, Fitbit Charge HR, Fitbit Charge and Fitbit Flex, are wristbands. Suggested retail prices of Fitbit devices vary from 59.95 U.S. dollars to 249.95 U.S. dollars.
Fitbit, one of the leading companies in the wearable industry, had almost 35 percent of the market share of wearable device unit shipments in the first quarter of 2015. The industry is expected to continue to grow, as the sales of health and fitness tracker are forecast to reach 25 million units worldwide in 2015.
Health and fitness trackers and smartwatches accounted for more than half of the wearable industry sales in 2014. This figure is forecast to increase to more than 70 percent by 2016. Samsung is the smartwatch market leader, with almost a quarter of the share. In 2014, the company’s revenue from smartwatch sales amounted to 300 million U.S. dollars.
