Passenger road transport - carbon dioxide emissions 2010-2020

Carbon emissions from passenger road vehicles have increased in tandem with the growing number of passenger vehicles in use today. Between 2010 and 2018, total emissions from passenger vehicles driving on the world's roads increased by around half a gigaton. Emissions from road passenger traffic are expected to plateau soon. The global coronavirus pandemic caused shutdowns of many major cities, with transportation being restricted within and between countries. This could lower transport vehicle emission far below the norm. In addition to this, it is expected that internal combustion engines will be phased out and electric vehicles will gain market share.
