Electricity imports in Brazil soared in 2021, amounting to 2.9 billion U.S. dollars. This was by far the highest figure recorded in a decade, and represented a growth of 90 percent in comparison to the previous year. Brazil, which is heavily reliant on hydropower, had to resort to imports amidst a hydric crisis due to a lack of rain. Brazil imports electricity from neighbors Paraguay and Argentina, and to a lesser extent, Uruguay.
