Japan: cashless payment usage after cashless rebate program

According to a survey conducted in 2020, more than 90 percent of the respondents in Japan stated that they still used cashless payments after the cashless rebate program ended in June 2020. Close to 10 percent stopped using cashless payments.
In October 2019, the Japanese government implemented the cashless rebate program along with a consumption tax hike in an attempt to decrease the burden on consumers while promoting cashless payments.

The survey results were adjusted to be consistent with the results of the national census in terms of the distribution of region, age, and gender. In addition, the results were corrected for high and low internet literacy ratios using the results of a separate survey.
