The high-end department store chain was founded in 1908, opening its first flagship store on Oxford Circus in London in the following year 1909. The department store primarily focuses on offerings such as luxury goods, fashion apparel and other general merchandise within the lifestyle segment and is had a net worth of 84.7 million British pounds, as of 2021.

The net assets of Selfridges reached their highest value of 432.7 million British pounds in 2019. This has steadily declined in the following years falling to 187.6 million pounds in 2022. The department store has had a history of being acquired by larger groups and investors in the past such as the department store John Lewis Partnership, Sears Group and latest the late investor Galen Weston in 2003.
