During the International Coastal Ocean Cleanup day in September 2020, thousands of people across Europe volunteered to collect waste from coastlines. Volunteers around the United Kingdom collected more than 150,000 waste items, including cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and bottle caps. This was the largest number of waste items found in Europe during the cleanup. Volunteers in Greece found the second largest number of waste items at slightly more than 100,000.
