As of March 2023, the United States had several regulations at a state level protecting its users' online privacy but lacked a comprehensive consumer privacy law covering the entire country. Currently, five U.S. states present consumer privacy laws. California, the first state to develop a privacy bill in 2018, has two such laws: the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which was enacted in January 2020, and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) which is more recent and has been fully operative since January 2023. The Colorado Privacy Act (CPA) was suggested in 2021 and will be effective starting in July 2023.
