EU-27: GHG emission reduction progress 2005-2030

Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union dropped to 3.1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2020, meaning the bloc exceeded its 2020 emissions target. However, current projections show that the EU will not reach its 2030 emissions target of 2.1 GtCO₂e. As part of the Fit for 55 package, the EU has set the target of reducing net GHG emissions by 55 percent by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.

Data on GHG emissions are shown as net emissions including international aviation emissions for all years. The 2020 target, defined without taking into account LULUCF emissions and removals, has been translated into a net emissions target by multiplying net 1990 emissions by 80%. The 2030 projection for GHG emissions with additional measures (WAMs) stems from the aggregation of national projections reported to the EEA.
