Retail in Latin America

As in much of Latin America, Brazil's policymakers have quickly shifted from a focus on excessive inflation towards growth. In the beginning of 2011, Latin American markets were growing rapidly and experiencing uncomfortably high inflation. Central banks raised interest rates, which resulted in a sharp rise in the value of the currency which harmed export competitiveness. Yet by the second half of the year, with domestic demand decelerating and exports being harmed by slower global growth, central banks shifted and cut interest rates.

Consumer spending has held up well despite the economic slowdown which is due in large part to continuing growth of consumer credit. While positive for spending, credit expansion does pose a risk to the economy and especially the banking system.

The Latin American region represents four percent of the world's leading 250 retailers.
