Lip balm and cold sore medication

Usually applied to the lips of the mouth to relieve cold sores, chapped or dry lips, the occlusive materials within lip balm (waxes or petroleum jelly) maintain lip comfort by preventing moisture loss. This product was first marketed in the late 19th century by Charles Browne Fleet, the creator of ChapStick.

The term ChapStick has become a genericized trademark which refers to any lip balm that is contained in a lipstick-style tube. However the actual ChapStick brand is a registered trademark of Pfizer, an American multi-national corporation that produces medicines and vaccines for a wide range of conditions. In 2012, ChapStick Classic was the third leading lip balm/cold sore medication brand in the United States, generating sales just under 39 million U.S. dollars. These numbers have been calculated by taking U.S. sales totals through food, drug and mass merchandise outlets (excluding Walmart) for the 52 week period which ended September 9, 2012.

Pfizer is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies and was projected to have generated a total of about 44.3 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2013. Pfizer's primary market is based on the sale of pharmaceutical products as oppose to consumer healthcare products. In 2013, Pfizer's top-selling product worldwide was Lyrica, an anti-convulsant drug used for neuropathic pain and generalized anxiety order. The drug generated a global revenue of approximately 4.62 billion U.S. dollars.
