Distribution of Twitter users – additional information
Twitter is available worldwide and in more than 30 different languages. This scope allows the distribution of Twitter users to be measured in a variety of ways.
In the modern age, rightly or wrongly, teenagers are stereotyped for being glued to their mobile devices and constantly messaging, sharing pictures and playing games with their friends on social media sites. One way of challenging this stereotype is to examine teenagers as a percentage of active Twitter users. This was measured in selected countries in 2013. As of October 2013, 87 percent of active Twitter users in the Philippines were teenagers. In comparison, teenagers only accounted for 18 percent of active Twitter users in Canada.
In a ranking of leading social networks worldwide as of December 2014, by the number of active users, Twitter’s popularity can be determined. The market leader was Facebook with 1.35 billion active users. In comparison, Twitter was ranked sixth in the world with 284 million active users. It was revealed that QZone, Google+, LinkedIn and Instagram all ranked higher than Twitter demonstrating their wider appeal among global social media users.
In March 2013, the number of registered Twitter users in selected countries worldwide was determined. The results revealed that more than 143 million Twitter accounts were registered to users in the U.S. In comparison, 41 million Twitter accounts were registered in Brazil and 32 million accounts were registered to users in the United Kingdom.
