Groupon mobile - additional information
Groupon was launched in 2008 in the United States, as a deal-of-the-day platform, where subscribers can purchase vouchers and coupons for a wide range of services and products, from a romantic dinner to a manicure or a cruise vacation. They can also receive daily or weekly alerts with special offers, based on preference, location and/or transaction history.
The website expanded quickly to the international market, by acquiring many similar local services, such as MyCityDeal (Europe), ClanDescuento (South America), or Qpod.jp (Japan). It has, as of the fourth quarter of 2017, almost 50 million global unique customers who had bought at least one deal during the previous year. During the same quarter, the company’s worldwide revenue was over 873 million U.S. dollars. In the United States, Groupon.com is the leading coupon website, with some 30 million unique monthly visitors. The platform has generated more than 1.9 billion in North American market revenue in 2017, an increase from 14.5 million U.S. dollars eight years prior.
One of the key to the company’s success is their Groupon app, available on iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone. The application enables users to browse deals in their area or even in stores, as they are shopping, and to redeem the deals by using the screen as a coupon to be scanned. Mobile couponing is an increasingly popular phenomenon, especially in the United States and according to Groupon, around 70 percent of its transactions were completed via tablet or smartphone in December 2014. As of 2017, 177 million users have downloaded the Groupon mobile app. The coupon website had over 49 million active customers as of the fourth quarter of 2017.
