U.S. dollar sales of the leading frozen pizza crust/dough vendors 2021
Frozen pizza - additional information
Pizza, a type of flatbread which originated from Naples, Italy, became widespread in the United States in the 1950s. This dish is commonly spread with tomato sauce and topped with cheese and a variety of meats, seafood, and/or vegetables then baked in an oven. Pizza is sold fresh, frozen or in portion-sized slices. The term “crust” refers to the base of the pizza which may vary according to preparation styles. Neapolitan pizzas, for instance, are made with thin, hand-kneaded crusts. Deep dish style pizzas have thick crusts which allow ample room for more toppings. New York-style pizzas have deliberately thin and narrow crusts so they can be folded in half and eaten like a sandwich.
Frozen pizzas, along with other convenience foods, have become a staple in many home kitchens in the United States. Nestlé-owned DiGiorno, the leading frozen pizza brand in the country, generated approximately 1 billion U.S. dollars in sales in 2017. For the 52 weeks ending March 21, 2021, frozen pizza crusts and doughs accounted for nearly 40 million U.S. dollars. U.S. consumers had shown a preference for Caulipower brand — about 19 million units of Caulipower pizza crusts and dough were sold during this period. Cali Flour Foods was the second-largest U.S. vendor of the pizza crust and dough category, based on generated sales.
