Food and nutrition habits among consumers in Canada 2017

As of March 2017, some 35 percent of consumers who are involved in household shopping always read labels on food packages in Canada. Other food and nutrition habits which Canadians always or usually carry out included making food choices based on what the whole family will enjoy, selecting food for health reasons and maintaining a “heart healthy” diet. Despite these healthy habits, just 18 percent of consumers stated that they always or usually sacrifice taste for health benefits.

Healthy diets in Canada

Some 48 percent of Canadians believe that their diet isn’t perfect, yet they try to eat healthily when they can. Males aged between 35 and 54 are the demographic most likely to believe that they could be eating a lot healthier. When it comes to motivations to eat more healthily, wanting to lose weight and protecting long-term health were the top two cited reasons among Canadian consumers. Drinking more water or other fluids and eating more fruits and vegetables were the most popular ways to make an effort to be healthier.
