In 2019, about ten percent of the employed population in Italy travelled by public transportation or shared transportation to reach their workplace. The regions with the highest percentages of employed commuters were registered in the northern region of Liguria, and in Lazio, in the center. The share of students commuters was about three times higher, recording the highest percentages in Basilicata, in the south, as well as in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and in Trentino-South Tyrol, in the north of the country.
