In 2023, retail sales value of chocolate amounted to around 604 billion Japanese yen, accounting for the largest share of the confectionery retail sales in Japan. Traditional Japanese confectionery (wagashi) ranked in third, with more than 498 billion yen. Wagashi refers to bite-sized sweets in Japan and are commonly served during Japanese tea ceremony.
