Monthly household expenditure on apparel and footwear in Russia 2001-2018

The average monthly spending on apparel and footwear in Russian households has been gradually increasing over the period under consideration. In 2018, average household expenditure was measured at nearly 4.8 thousand U.S. dollars per year - of which roughly eight percent was spent on fashion items, amounting to about 1.4 thousand Russian rubles per month.

Russian clothing retail industry

Russian clothing retail market has been gradually recovering over the last years after the 2014-2017 financial crisis, which stemmed from a sharp devaluation of the national currency. Average per capita household spending growth on apparel and footwear, along with the accelerated e-commerce market development in the region, were some of the crucial stimulating factors of that recovery. Simultaneously, the Russian offline trade of clothing and footwear was also experiencing expansion - the highest number of retail chains countrywide in 2019 was recorded for the named sectors.   

Shopping behavior

Even though online shopping is becoming increasingly popular in Russia, preference for traditional shopping experience remains significantly widespread among customers of all ages. In terms of average spending, traditional offline stores also outlined their online counterparts by average receipt value in 2019.
