Considering people of all ages, smoking is generally more common among males than females in Italy, with almost 23.8 percent of males smoking compared to 15.6 percent of females. As of 2022, most smokers were aged between 25 and 44 years and had a lower secondary school certificate.

Smokers by region

As of 2022, Umbria was among the Italian region with the highest percentage of smokers aged 14 years and older, with roughly 24.8 smokers per 100 residents. Conversely, the region with the lowest share of individuals smoking was Veneto, with around 16.3 percent.
