Liverpool's latest signing, Southampton's Virgil van Dijk, is the most expensive defender in Premier League history. Despite having previously criticised Manchester United manager Mourinho for his perceived lavish spending on Paul Pogba, saying he would rather quit than spend such large sums, the Reds' boss has now seemingly given in to market forces and smashed the transfer fee record by quite a margin. Mourihno himself has criticised Manchester City saying they "buy full-backs for the price of strikers", and indeed, City dominate the top five list.
