As this chart using data from the National Retail Federation shows, Fourth of July spending on cookouts is on the rise. In 2014 the average person spent $68.16 on food for a cookout or picnic and this year, that figure is at $75.35 - combining for a total U.S. spend of $6.9 billion. According to the survey, a cookout is the most popular way of celebrating Independence Day, with 62 percent saying they will host or participate in one.
