Alarming rise in self-harm incidents in UK prisons
UK Prison System
New data released by the Ministry of Justice shows that last year, there were 325 prison deaths in England and Wales up to December, a 10 percent increase on 2017. The number of incidents of self-harm are also climbing steadily and they reached a record high of 52,814 last year. A decade ago, the total number of self-harm incidents in prisons in England and Wales was 24,119. The grim data raises serious questions about safety levels in British prisons. Justice Secretary David Gauke conceded that the state of safety is "disturbing".
