According to the National Travel and Tourism Office
at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Mexico and Canada were by far the most popular destinations for U.S. resident travelers
in 2017, the latest year on record. While 35.1 million U.S. residents visited Mexico in one year, 14.3 million made a trip to Canada. While around a quarter went to Mexico by plane, around a third chose that transport option for traveling to Canada.
Third on the list is the UK with 3.8 million visitors in 2017, followed by the Dominican Republic with 2.7 million and France with 2.6 million travelers. The top 10 list is dominated by European and Caribbean nations with the exception of China in tenth place.
Another Asian nation scored the top spot for most increased traveler volume between 2014 and 2017. Thailand saw around 40 percent more U.S. visitors in that time frame, closely followed by Ireland and The Netherlands.
