If you're British and you're considering retirement in a sunny village in southern Europe, your plans could be scuppered, depending on the outcome of Brexit negotiations A few weeks ago, Home Office sources said that British expats could be forced to apply for long-term residency visas if they want to live in the European Union after Brexit.
However, Britons who already live abroad are unlikely to be affected. Where do the majority of British expatriates live? According to the United Nations, Spain is their destination of choice with an estimated 381,000 Britons in residence. The Republic of Ireland, which has seen a surge in British passport applications, comes second with just over a quarter of a million.
