United Kingdom: top 10 online stores by revenue 2018

Over the past few years, turnover in the British B2C e-commerce market has risen steadily, amounting to around US$74.0 billion in 2018. Amazon.co.uk is leading the british e-commerce market, with a revenue of US$8, 326.4m, directly followed by tesco.com with US$4, 821.9m. Third place went to argos.co.uk with over US$3, 177.1m.

Much more than an online store

Amazon.com. is an international e-commerce company offering online retail, computing services, consumer electronics, digital content as well as other local services such as daily deals and groceries. The majority of the company’s revenues are generated through e-retail sales of electronics and other products, followed by third-party seller revenues, subscription services and AWS activities. Due to Amazon’s global scope and reach, it is also considered one of the most valuable brands worldwide. The online retailer does not only lead in terms of desktop retailing but has also taken to mobile commerce. Amazon Mobile is one of the most popular retail apps in the United States. The Amazon smartphone app is also the second-most popular purchase channel of Amazon buyers in the United States.

The supermarket Tesco in the second place

Tesco, Plc is a British grocery and general merchandise retailer that operates internationally with headquarters in Hertfordshire, England. In the United Kingdom, Tesco is the leading grocery retailer with a consistent share of over 25 percent of the market and is classed as one of the 'big four' supermarkets along with Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons. Originally founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen, the group has more recently diversified both geographically and into other retail areas, such as books, clothing, electronics and toys, as well as financial service and telecoms and internet service subsidiaries. The group also exists internationally with wholly-owned grocery retail operations in nine countries, in addition to interests in a number of other businesses and joint ventures with local partners.
