It is estimated that 4.9 million metric tons of plastic is placed on the market (POM) in the United Kingdom each year. Of this total, approximately three quarters becomes waste. Plastic waste pollution is a growing problem worldwide, due to its environmental impacts on land and in oceans and rivers.
