Verizon was the leading wireless telecommunications provider in the United States in 2013, announcing revenue of over 81 billion U.S. dollars. Its closest competitor was AT&T, whose wireless operating revenue amounted to just under 70 billion U.S. dollars.
Verizon’s revenue has increased steadily since the beginning of 2010 and it reached a record quarterly high of 31.6 billion U.S. dollars in the third quarter of 2014. The majority of the company’s revenue is generated in wireless services and, in 2013, the wireless segment generated more than twice the revenue of the wireline segment. Verizon also has the lowest churn rate out of all of the major wireless carriers in the United States, meaning that the company has the lowest proportion of customers who cease using its wireless services per month.
AT&T had a total of 110 million wireless subscribers in 2013, of whom over 72 million had a postpaid subscription. The company’s churn rate in 2013 stood at 1.37 percent, but this figure was lower among its postpaid subscribers. Although AT&T has reduced its number of employees every year since 2007, its worldwide revenue and brand value have continued to increase. As of 2013, the Texas-based company generated global operating revenue of 128.75 billion U.S. dollars.
The third largest telecommunication provider in the United Sates is T-Mobile USA, which announced revenue of just under 25 billion U.S. dollars in 2013. In the final quarter of 2013, the company had around 46.7 million customers, just under half of whom were branded postpaid subscribers. T-Mobile USA’s revenue continued to grow in 2014 and its quarterly earnings exceeded 7 billion for the first time in the second quarter of 2014.
