Most successful German films 2021, by number of viewers

Almost 1.33 million people went to see Die Schule der magischen Tiere, making it the most viewed German film of 2021. It was followed by Kaiserschmarmdrama and Contra.

Book to film

Die Schule der magischen Tiere (The School of Magical Animals) is based on a popular series of children's books written by German author Margit Auer. The series began its published journey in 2013 and has since been a long-standing bestseller. The first film based on the books came out in 2021 to wide acclaim, and a sequel has been released in September 2022. Bringing the conversation back to movies, currently there are over 1,700 cinemas in Germany. These house a total of 4,961 screens.

Falling admissions

Admissions in German cinemas dropped in recent years. This may be due to various reasons, such as the rise and spread of video streaming services, as well as cinema tickets becoming more and more expensive, going from an average of 6 euros in 2008 to almost 9 euros per ticket in 2021. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and current inflation developments contribute to these trends.
