Ranking of the most successful German films in 2018 by number of cinema goers

Most successful German films ranked by number of cinema goers in Germany in 2018

by Evgeniya Koptyug, last edited May 27, 2019
Ranking of the most successful German films in 2018 by number of cinema goers Over 1.8 million people went to see Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver (Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer), making it the most successful German film of 2018. It was followed by The Little Witch (Die kleine Hexe) and This Crazy Heart (Dieses bescheuerte Herz).
Book to film

All three films were based on eponymous novels, with the first two being based on internationally popular children’s books. In fact, Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver was written by German author Michael Ende, who also wrote The Neverending Story. Bringing the conversation back to movies, currently there are over 1,600 cinemas in Germany. These house a total of 4,849 screens.

Falling admissions

Admissions in German cinemas dropped in recent years, amounting to 105.4 million in 2018. This may be due to various reasons, such as the rise and spread of video streaming services, as well as cinema tickets becoming more and more expensive, going from an average of 6 euros in 2008 to 8.5 euros per ticket in 2018.
