The health and fitness wearable segment is one of the most promising segments of the wearable market, creating opportunity for vendors in this particular niche. Shipment of sports watch and other fitness monitors is forecast to increase from about 42 million in 2015 to around 52 million by 2017. Due to the demand for this type of wearable, Fitbit, the California-based company which specializes in compact, wireless wearable technology for the health and fitness industry, has had successful results in the last few years. Fitbit shipped about 21 million units in 2015, about 10 million more than the previous year. Xiaomi, its closest competitor in the market, shipped 12.3 million wearable units in 2015. With 30 percent of the market share as of the last quarter of 2015, Fitbit has taken the lead in the wearable market, leaving big tech names such as Apple, Xiaomi, Garmin and Samsung behind.

Since 2010, Fitbit has sold nearly 17 million devices – 10.9 million units in 2014 alone. The suggested retail price of Fitbit devices varies from 60 U.S. dollars to around 250 U.S. dollars. As of 2015, Fitbit Zip is the most affordable Fitbit device, while Fitbit Surge is the most expensive one. Fitbit's focus on fitness tracking functionality has been successful among customers. The company’s strategy of targeting large corporations and their corporate health initiatives has also been paying off, as sales have been on the rise. This growth also reflects on the number of active users. As of March 2015, Fitbit had 9.5 million active users. This figure is a significant increase from 2013, when the company had around 2.6 million active users.
