Mastercard's purchase volume in the United States increased by roughly 150 billion dollars in 2023, which was less than Visa's increase. Visa's market share in the U.S. especially increased during the coronavirus pandemic, mostly as Americans used more debit cards. The growing use of debit cards in the U.S. may explain why the market share of American Express declined compared to the other schemes.
